Chicago Heights, IL – Habitat for Humanity Chicago South Suburbs will be observing Earth Day on Friday, April 29th and Saturday, April 30th at our ReStore located at 180 W. Joe Orr Road, Chicago Heights, IL. In honor of Earth Day we are kicking off an electronics recycling collection program. E-waste is the fastest growing segment of the nations garbage according to the U.S. Environment Protection Agency “We will accept drop-offs during regular business hours” stated David Tracy, affiliate executive director. The ReStore is an opportunity for the public to recycle and reuse in an innovative way and thereby, reducing landfill use. In 2008 alone, Illinois landfills accepted over 15 million tons of solid waste. The average ReStore diverts 150 tons of waste each year from landfills. Habitat for Humanity ReStores serves over 700 communities nationally. “Earth Day is a great opportunity to let people know how Habitat for Humanity is doing their part in keeping the planet clean” said David Tracy, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity Chicago South Suburbs. With over 400,000 families living in critical housing conditions in the Chicago land areas, ReStore funding provides a solution by providing permanent, affordable housing. Habitat for Humanity affiliates serve struggling families by engaging volunteers and the community to build and rehabilitate homes. The families purchase the homes through a no-interest loan after completing hundreds of hours of sweat equity. Over 400,000 families achieved the dream of homeownership through Habitat for Humanity affiliates worldwide since 1976. About Habitat for Humanity Chicago South Suburbs The Habitat for Humanity South Suburbs work in partnership with people in need to provide modest and affordable housing by building and renovating houses using donated materials and volunteer labor.
